Celebrations and Special Days
The children and staff enjoy planning special events that include parents, grandparents, older and younger siblings, Board members, and church staff and volunteers.
We kick off the year with a Fall Festival that includes arts, crafts and games for children. Then, the week before Thanksgiving we celebrate with a Thanksgiving Feast. Our children sing some songs and we invite parents to join us for a festive luncheon. The week before Christmas we have a Holiday Celebration that includes a children's performance followed by a classroom party. Occasionally we encourage children to bring their three-wheelers to school for a bike-a-thon. Our families pledge pennies for each lap the children complete and we donate our earnings to a local charity or to St. Jude's Hospital for Children.
In addition to these celebration days, teachers will host parent get-togethers to talk about the classroom and the curriculum. Your teaching staff will advise you of other special days like “pajama day,” “mismatch day,” “hat day” and others. Parents are always welcomed to visit or join in when their work schedules permit.
When public school lets out for summer, Childtown begins a “Summer Camp” schedule. During summer camp we picnic once a week, have water play (unless watering restrictions are in place), listen to storytellers, and celebrate a different theme each week.
End of Year Celebration/Silent Auction
Every spring we host a silent auction fundraising event along with an end of year celebration. In 2009, this event is scheduled for Wednesday, May 13th. Months prior to this event parents solicit items from local contributors to be auctioned off to the highest bidders. In years past, items have included use of a vacation home, tickets to popular area sporting events, discounts for local services, bottles of fine wine, and a host of home decorating accessories. Parents from each classroom contribute items to go in fetching, creatively themed baskets like last year’s “Are We There Yet?” (Family Car-Trip Basket). Along with these contributions, our fabulously artistic children work as a class project for bid. In our End-of-Year Celebration Program we recognize all the children’s accomplishments but especially those children moving on to “higher education” programs like kindergarten and public pre-K.
Silent Auction planning meetings begin after the first of the year. They are held on Mondays at 5:00 p.m. in the Church Library. Please come and help us organize this fantastic event! Last year our Silent Auction raised more than $5,000. That money provided us with a giant playground sandbox. The remaining money will be used to refurbish our playground equipment and add a new climber. Our parents are so very supportive!
